about
I had just dropped my youngest (my daughter) off for her freshman year at Connecticut College. I’d been trying to get my music to show up on the map, realized it just wasn’t going to happen. And then the lyrics of this song came, to comfort me, to put things in their proper perspective.
lyrics
I’m reading Billboard.
I’m forty-six years old.
I am a songwriter, and
the music biz is cold.
I work real hard
to get my songs to chart.
I’ll never make it,
and I’m losing heart.
Live three blocks down
from the aquarium.
I buy my ticket,
and I walk on in.
There is this jellyfish there
talking to me.
His body teaches, and
I get it. I start to see.
Jellyfish, wafting through the world,
Jellyfish, weaving through the world.
Beautiful for anyone.
Beautiful everyone.
Beautiful for no one.
Beautiful for no reason.
There is no Grammy for the jellyfish.
No World Cup, no Academy Award.
More beauty there than you could ever wish.
More beauty there than you could ever afford.
She’s doing her job down at the bottom of the sea.
No gawking mob. There is no MTV.
She trails a silken thread of apricot chiffon,
moving through the water with her party dress on…
And the party is the darkness,
and the deep and the dance.
Just her and what she does,
and me here by chance.
No product was made,
no money changed hands,
no ad campaign,
just the tender wonderland of
Jellyfish, wafting through the world,
Jellyfish, weaving through the world.
Beautiful for anyone.
Beautiful everyone.
Beautiful for no one.
Beautiful for no reason.
